how to create and interpret intergenerational patterns within the family system
A GENOGRAM maps much more than just your ancestry. It conveys who you belong to and the patterns of your family over several generations. It is by far the best way to explore and keep track of basic information about families from a systemic perspective. By using genograms within a psychodynamic approach, therapists can offer deeper insights about the overt and hidden problems that people so often get stuck in: anger, trauma, depression, anxiety, and relationship cutoff or conflict.
GENOGRAMS can help us diagram and clarify complex family patterns across multiple situations and in challenging social contexts. They can also expand families’ constraining narratives, offering new perspectives on life experiences and future possibilities, and help patients see issues that have been out of awareness and make connections to their presenting unbalance.
All human beings are inextricably interwoven into broader interactional systems, the most fundamental of which is the family. The family is the primary and, except in unusual instances, the most powerful system to which we ever belong. In this framework, “family” consists of the entire kinship network of at least three generations, both as it currently exists and as it has evolved over time.
THE COURSE
During this highly interactive course you will learn the rules of genogram mapping as well as the interpretive principles upon which genograms are based. You will learn how to assess individual, family, and larger cultural and community patterns. The Genogram Journey includes an extensive list of systemic questions and practical work at the end of each class to facilitate understanding of the dynamics explored through the lens of attachment-based and schema therapy. By the end of the course you will be able to encrypt the maladaptive patterns and relational trauma that are transmitted down the generations, primarily through the mechanism of emotional triangling.
In the last part we will discover the symbology and archetypes hidden in the family maps along with a accurate review of several case studies and effective psychoterapy treatments and techniques.
